Europe's Most Clinical Clubs: Goals per Shot on Target by Team

I measured goals per shot on target for 174 clubs across nine European top flights. Borussia Dortmund lead at 40.5%, and the club matters far more than the league.

Most bettors can name a club that seems to score whenever it hits the target. I wanted to see whether that reputation survives the numbers, so I took 14,771 league matches across nine European top flights from 2021/22–2025/26 and measured goals per shot on target for every club with 76+ matches. That gives 174 clubs and a baseline: 31.9% of shots on target were scored.

The headline answer is Borussia Dortmund at 40.5%, with Valladolid at the bottom on 23.3%. Conversion is one of the inputs I check before anything reaches my correct score tips page, because a side that finishes well above average makes the bigger scorelines more likely. The charts below show who leads, how far the leaders sit above their own leagues, and which big clubs shoot a lot but finish ordinarily.

Section ABorussia Dortmund lead Europe's most clinical clubs ahead of Sporting CP

The first chart ranks the 16 clubs that scored the highest share of their shots on target. Dortmund scored 40.5% of 931 shots on target, with a 95% range of ±3.2 points, so even the cautious end of that range sits clearly above the 31.9% average. Sporting CP (38.6%), Arsenal (37.9%) and Inter (37.8%) follow, and PSG close the list at 36.1%.

What strikes me is how tightly bunched the chasing pack is. Below Dortmund, the gaps between clubs are often smaller than the uncertainty around any one of them, so I would not read much into the order from second to sixteenth.

The main caveat applies to everything that follows. A shot on target says nothing about chance quality, so a high rate can mean elite finishers or simply a club that shoots from better positions, and because conversion swings from season to season, two seasons of data is weaker evidence than five.

Section BFrom Arsenal to Fenerbahçe, every league leader clears its average

This chart sets each league's average against its most clinical club. The averages are tight, from 31.1% in La Liga to 33.3% in the Bundesliga, so the competition matters less than the club. Every leader pulls well clear: Villarreal at 37.1%, PSV at 37.0% and Celtic at 37.6%.

The widest gaps belong to Dortmund and to Sporting CP, who scored 38.6% against a Primeira Liga average of 31.6%. The narrowest is PSG, at 36.1% against a Ligue 1 average of 31.7%, which surprised me given their attacking resources.

For a bettor, the point is that a league-wide rate undersells the top sides. If you price a goals line for these clubs off the domestic average, you are starting from the wrong number.

Section CArsenal finish best among big clubs while Real Madrid trail

The table puts shooting volume next to finishing for the champions-level clubs. Arsenal top it at 37.9% from 5.3 shots on target per game, while Real Madrid sit bottom at 32.1% despite producing 6.5 per game. Madrid get their goals through volume rather than precision.

Bayern Munich and PSV combine both, with 7.9 and 7.8 shots on target per game converted at 37.6% and 37.0%. That is why they average 2.96 and 2.88 goals per game. Napoli sit at the other end, with the fewest shots on target in the group at 5.1 per game and 1.70 goals per game.

Section DBenfica, PSG and Real Madrid concede least per shot faced

The last chart turns to the other penalty area and shows what share of shots on target faced ended up in the net. Benfica conceded only 25.1%, ahead of PSG at 25.8% and Real Madrid at 25.9%. This is a rough guide to goalkeeping and to the quality of shots a side allows, not a clean goalkeeper rating.

Real Madrid are the interesting case. Their finishing is ordinary for a big club, yet their defence sits near the top of this list, so their matches lean towards control rather than shootouts. Inter appear on both lists, at 37.8% in attack and 26.5% in defence.

Club verdict

What this file means before you bet.

  • Respect Dortmund's finishing. Borussia Dortmund's 40.5% held across 931 shots on target, so I would not price their attack off the 31.9% average. Club samples are small, though, and conversion moves from season to season.
  • Price Madrid on volume. Real Madrid convert only 32.1% but produce 6.5 shots on target per game and concede just 25.9% of those they face. Their goals come from volume, and their matches tend to be controlled.
  • Adjust for clubs, not leagues. Every league's most clinical club, from Sporting CP at 38.6% to PSG at 36.1%, sits well above a domestic average between 31.1% and 33.3%. Start from the club's own rate.
