How Often Do Big Clubs Win at Odds Under 1.30? Club by Club

Short-priced favourites win slightly more often than their odds suggest. Whether that turns a profit depends heavily on the club, and the margins are thin.

Every weekend the coupon is full of big clubs at prices under 1.30, and plenty of bettors fold them into accumulators without a second thought. Before you take any short favourite from today's 1X2 tips, it helps to know whether those prices are fair. I looked at 1,506 league matches across 11 European top flights where the favourite was priced under 1.30.

The headline answer is that favourites under 1.30 won 82.7% of the time, against a priced rate of 79.1%. That edge is real but small. Flat stakes returned −1.0% at a major bookmaker and +1.3% at the best price. The interesting part is how unevenly that edge is spread between clubs.

Section ASporting CP and Porto beat their short prices most clearly

This chart sets each club's priced win rate, with the margin stripped out, against how often it actually won. Of the 18 clubs priced under 1.30 at least 30 times, these are the 12 with the most such matches. Sporting CP stand out: priced at 78.6%, they won 92.8% of 83 matches. Porto, PSV, Manchester City and Benfica all cleared their priced rate comfortably as well.

At the bottom, the market had Bayern Munich, Ajax and Rangers about right. Bayern were priced at 82.0% and won 81.6%. Ajax were priced at 81.0% and won 80.0%. For these clubs the price told you exactly what you were getting.

This is where I need to be straight. Club samples run from 49 to 112 matches, and the ranges are wide: ±5.6 points for Sporting CP, ±9.8 for Barcelona. Most of the gaps between clubs could be noise, so treat the order on this chart as a lead to investigate, not a ranking to trust.

Section BFeyenoord, PSG and Celtic drop points through draws

A short-priced favourite rarely loses outright. What costs you is the draw, and this chart shows which clubs are prone to them. Feyenoord drew 15.3% of their under-1.30 matches but lost only 1.7%. Ajax drew 13.8%, PSG 12.7% and Celtic 12.5%.

Defeats tell a different story. Rangers lost 9.9% and Bayern Munich 8.0%, the two highest figures in the group. Sporting CP lost just 2.4% and Benfica 2.2%, although Benfica still drew 11.1%.

For me, this changes how I think about each club. Where draws are the main leak and defeats are rare, the draw-no-bet or double-chance markets deserve a look. Where defeats are the leak, nothing protects you at these prices.

Section CBacking Sporting CP paid, while Bayern Munich and Ajax lost money

Win rates only matter when you set them against the price you were paid. Flat stakes on Sporting CP returned +11.3% at a major bookmaker and +14.1% at the best price. Porto returned +3.8% and Barcelona +3.7%, again at the major-bookmaker price.

At the other end, Ajax returned −6.4%, Rangers −5.6% and Bayern Munich −4.8% at a major bookmaker. Even at the best price, all three stayed in the red.

Look at how much each bar moves between the two series. Across every club under 1.30, the major-bookmaker price lost −1.0% and the best price made +1.3%. At these odds, line shopping is the difference between a losing habit and a breakeven one. Remember too that a handful of rare defeats drive these returns, so past figures are no promise of future ones.

Section DThe shortest favourites under 1.15 win far more often

Splitting every club's matches by price shows where the edge sits. Under 1.15, favourites won 90.4% of 311 matches against a priced 85.4%, with fair odds of 1.11 and a return of +0.1%. Between 1.15 and 1.21 the return slipped to −1.5%, and between 1.22 and 1.29 it was −1.2%.

Every band beat its priced win rate, yet none produced a meaningful profit at the major-bookmaker price. The market seems to favour backers slightly on win rate, but the margin takes most of that back.

Club verdict

What this file means before you bet.

  • Always take the best price. At the major-bookmaker price all under-1.30 favourites returned −1.0%, while the best price turned that into +1.3%. If you cannot beat the standard price, the short favourite is not worth backing on its own.
  • Watch Sporting CP and Porto. Sporting CP returned +11.3% and Porto +3.8% at a major bookmaker, both clearly beating their priced win rate. With 83 and 73 matches respectively, these are small samples, so I treat them as clubs to monitor rather than automatic picks.
  • Be wary of Bayern Munich and Ajax. Bayern Munich returned −4.8% and Ajax −6.4% at a major bookmaker, and both won slightly less often than they were priced to. Rangers, losing 9.9% of these matches, belong in the same caution pile.

Not reliably. Flat stakes returned −1.0% at a major bookmaker and +1.3% at the best available price, so the result depends almost entirely on the odds you get.

Which club wins most often at odds under 1.30?
