Bundesliga Clubs vs the Odds: Which Teams Pay When Backed?
I backed every Bundesliga club to win every league match on paper. Most lost money, but a handful paid, and the profit usually came when the market had them as outsiders.
Every Bundesliga season produces a club that bettors swear the market keeps underrating. I wanted to test that against the record. If you had put a flat stake on each club to win every league match across 2021/22–2025/26, who would have come out ahead, and did the money come as favourite or underdog? The sample covers 1,530 matches and 19 clubs with at least 68 league games each.
The short answer is that 7 of 19 clubs finished in profit at the major-bookmaker price. Augsburg led at +22.8%, while St Pauli cost backers −29.8%, and backing everyone blindly returned −8.0%. My match-by-match reasoning sits on my 1X2 bet tips page, and this study is the longer view behind it.
Section AAugsburg top the Bundesliga ROI table while St Pauli and Köln trail
The table ranks clubs by flat-stake return at the major-bookmaker price, alongside how often each one won and how often the market priced them to win. Augsburg sit top at +22.8% over 170 matches, ahead of Werder Bremen on +11.1% and Bochum on +8.3%. At the other end, FC Köln returned −29.3% and St Pauli −29.8%.
Look at the 95% range column before getting excited. Augsburg's ±38.6 is wider than the return itself, and none of the 19 clubs had a range sitting entirely above zero. The typical spread was ±21.3 points. That is my main caveat for the whole piece: over a few seasons, club returns are a noisy record, and most of the gaps between clubs could easily be chance.
| Club | Matches | Won | Priced | ROI | 95% range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Augsburg | 170 | 30.6% | 27.7% | +22.8% | ±38.6 |
| Werder Bremen | 136 | 31.6% | 30.7% | +11.1% | ±43.5 |
| Bochum | 136 | 25.0% | 25.3% | +8.3% | ±41.6 |
| Bayer Leverkusen | 170 | 57.1% | 53.0% | +3.5% | ±15.4 |
| Union Berlin | 170 | 37.1% | 34.2% | +3.1% | ±22.1 |
| Borussia Dortmund | 170 | 59.4% | 53.5% | +2.6% | ±14.6 |
| Freiburg | 170 | 42.4% | 36.8% | +0.3% | ±19.0 |
| Mainz | 170 | 32.9% | 35.6% | −4.2% | ±23.9 |
| Hoffenheim | 170 | 35.9% | 37.2% | −13.8% | ±19.0 |
| Stuttgart | 170 | 40.6% | 41.9% | −14.9% | ±16.6 |
| Heidenheim | 102 | 23.5% | 24.8% | −16.5% | ±31.9 |
| Borussia Mönchengladbach | 170 | 30.6% | 35.3% | −18.0% | ±21.3 |
| Wolfsburg | 170 | 31.2% | 35.6% | −18.9% | ±19.4 |
| Hertha Berlin | 68 | 23.5% | 27.0% | −19.8% | ±39.3 |
| FC Köln | 136 | 26.5% | 32.1% | −29.3% | ±21.2 |
| St Pauli | 68 | 20.6% | 27.6% | −29.8% | ±36.9 |
Top 8 and bottom 8 of 19 qualifying clubs; middle 3 omitted.
Price matters as much as the club. Backing every club at the best available price instead lifted the league-wide return from −8.0% to −3.4%, and the number of profitable clubs rose from 7 to 9. Augsburg at the best price came out at +35.8%. Whatever I think about a club, shopping around does more for my bottom line than any single opinion.
Section BAugsburg and Werder Bremen paid as underdogs, Köln did not
Splitting each club's bets by role shows me where the profit actually came from. Across the league, backing favourites returned −4.8% over 1,522 bets and underdogs −11.2% over 1,538, so blind outsider backing was the worse habit. The clubs at the top of the table bucked that. Augsburg were +32.5% as underdog across 130 matches against −8.8% as favourite, and Werder Bremen were +17.8% as underdog against −3.9% as favourite.
View the data: roi as favourite vs as underdog
| As favourite | As underdog | |
|---|---|---|
| Augsburg | −8.8% | +32.5% |
| Werder Bremen | −3.9% | +17.8% |
| Bochum | −21.7% | +13.5% |
| Bayer Leverkusen | +5.0% | −5.1% |
| Union Berlin | −2.9% | +8.1% |
| Borussia Dortmund | +11.0% | −43.8% |
| Borussia Mönchengladbach | −20.6% | −15.8% |
| Wolfsburg | −14.0% | −23.3% |
| FC Köln | −5.8% | −44.3% |
| All Bundesliga clubs | −4.8% | −11.2% |
Köln are the mirror image, losing −44.3% as underdog over 83 matches but only −5.8% as favourite. Borussia Dortmund also lean the opposite way to Augsburg, with their return coming as favourites and a heavy loss in the rarer games where they were outsiders. Some of these role splits rest on small numbers, so I treat them as a lean, not a rule.
Section CDortmund and Freiburg won more often than priced, St Pauli far less
This chart strips the bookmaker margin out and compares how often each club was expected to win with how often it actually did. Borussia Dortmund beat their price by the most, winning 59.4% against an implied 53.5%, with Freiburg and Bayer Leverkusen also clearing their line. At the bottom, St Pauli won 20.6% against 27.6% implied, and Köln won 26.5% against 32.1%.
View the data: priced to win vs actually won
| Priced | Won | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Borussia Dortmund (170 matches) | 53.5% | 59.4% | ±7.4 |
| Freiburg (170 matches) | 36.8% | 42.4% | ±7.4 |
| Bayer Leverkusen (170 matches) | 53.0% | 57.1% | ±7.4 |
| Augsburg (170 matches) | 27.7% | 30.6% | ±6.9 |
| Union Berlin (170 matches) | 34.2% | 37.1% | ±7.3 |
| Hertha Berlin (68 matches) | 27.0% | 23.5% | ±10.1 |
| Wolfsburg (170 matches) | 35.6% | 31.2% | ±7 |
| Borussia Mönchengladbach (170 matches) | 35.3% | 30.6% | ±6.9 |
| FC Köln (136 matches) | 32.1% | 26.5% | ±7.4 |
| St Pauli (68 matches) | 27.6% | 20.6% | ±9.6 |
What interests me is how win rate turns into return. Werder Bremen won 31.6% against an implied 30.7%, and Bochum won 25.0% against 25.3%, yet both showed a profit, because big underdog prices pay handsomely when they land. Dortmund outperformed their price by far more and still only returned +2.6%, while Freiburg managed just +0.3%. When a club is short, even a strong run of results barely moves the needle.
Club verdict
What this file means before you bet.
- Respect Augsburg as outsiders. Augsburg's +32.5% as underdog over 130 matches was the strongest role return in the study. Like every club figure here, it rests on a small sample, so I treat it as a reason to look closer, not to back them on autopilot.
- Demand more for Köln. FC Köln won 26.5% against an implied 32.1% and lost −44.3% as underdog. If they come back onto the coupon at similar prices, I want a bigger number before I side with them.
- Always take the best price. Moving from the major-bookmaker price to the best available lifted the all-club return from −8.0% to −3.4%. That gap is bigger than most of the club edges I could claim.
Frequently asked
Which Bundesliga club has been most profitable to back to win?
Augsburg, at +22.8% at the major-bookmaker price over 170 matches and +35.8% at the best price, across 2021/22–2025/26. The 95% range of ±38.6 points means that figure carries a lot of uncertainty.
Is it better to back favourites or underdogs in the Bundesliga?
Across the league, favourites returned −4.8% and underdogs −11.2% at the major-bookmaker price, so neither was profitable when backed blindly. Underdog profits were concentrated in a few clubs such as Augsburg and Werder Bremen.
Do Borussia Dortmund win more often than the odds suggest?
Over 170 matches they won 59.4% against a margin-free implied 53.5%, the biggest positive gap in the league. Because they are usually short-priced favourites, that only translated into a +2.6% return.
