After the International Break: Club Records in the First Match Back
Ten seasons of first-match-back results across Europe's top five leagues show the market prices the post-break round well. A handful of clubs, led by Aston Villa, are the exceptions.
International breaks are my busiest fortnights. Players scatter across continents, return on long flights and pick up knocks in meaningless friendlies. I spend the days before the first league match back chasing training reports so the news is in hand before anything goes onto my today's 1X2 tips page. The question here is simple: do clubs actually underperform the odds in that first game, or is the post-break slump mostly a story we tell ourselves?
The headline answer is that the market barely misses. Across 182 international breaks and 3,537 first-match-back club games, teams averaged 1.37 points per game against 1.38 expected, almost exactly what they managed in every other round. Draws edge up a touch, to 25.8% against 24.9%, and odds-on favourites dip only slightly. The interesting part is club by club, where a few names drift a long way from their prices.
Section ABundesliga and Ligue 1 favourites wobble most after the break
This is where the league-wide picture lives. Odds-on favourites won 64.7% of 880 first matches back, against 65.4% of 8,102 in other rounds, a difference too small to bet on by itself. The leagues split, though. Premier League favourites actually won more often after a break, 67.8% of 202 against 66.1%, while La Liga and Serie A sat almost exactly on their usual rate.
The two leagues that catch my eye are the Bundesliga and Ligue 1. Bundesliga favourites won 60.8% of 158 first matches back against 64.6% elsewhere, and Ligue 1 favourites managed 61.6% of 159 against 63.6%.
Bars show the 95% range for the first-match-back rate.

| Other rounds | First match back | 95% range | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premier League (202 games) | 66.1% | 67.8% | ±6.4 |
| La Liga (182 games) | 65.2% | 65.4% | ±6.9 |
| Serie A (179 games) | 66.9% | 66.5% | ±6.9 |
| Bundesliga (158 games) | 64.6% | 60.8% | ±7.6 |
| Ligue 1 (159 games) | 63.6% | 61.6% | ±7.6 |
The ranges on the chart are wide enough that neither dip proves anything. But if I am already chasing late news on a short-priced German or French favourite whose players have been away, this is a reason to look harder, not a reason to oppose them.
Section BManchester City, Napoli and PSG thrive while Milan stall
The fear with elite squads is that they lose the most players to international duty and come back jaded. The table says otherwise for several of them. Manchester City went 29-4-4 in 37 first matches back, 2.46 points per game against 2.20 expected, and PSG took 2.50 against 2.38 expected. Napoli stand out most, with 2.22 points per game against 1.85 expected.
Not everyone copes. Manchester United went 14-12-10 for 1.50 points per game against 1.71 expected, and Chelsea managed 1.69 against 1.90. AC Milan took 1.50 against 1.54 expected, well short of the 1.89 they average in other games.
| Club | Games | W-D-L | PPG | Expected | Other games |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manchester City | 37 | 29-4-4 | 2.46 | 2.20 | 2.26 |
| Liverpool | 36 | 24-7-5 | 2.19 | 1.97 | 2.10 |
| Arsenal | 37 | 21-8-8 | 1.92 | 1.83 | 1.91 |
| Chelsea | 36 | 18-7-11 | 1.69 | 1.90 | 1.77 |
| Manchester United | 36 | 14-12-10 | 1.50 | 1.71 | 1.77 |
| Tottenham | 37 | 21-5-11 | 1.84 | 1.67 | 1.64 |
| Real Madrid | 36 | 24-7-5 | 2.19 | 2.18 | 2.20 |
| Barcelona | 36 | 26-7-3 | 2.36 | 2.21 | 2.25 |
| Atlético Madrid | 36 | 21-10-5 | 2.03 | 1.85 | 1.99 |
| Bayern Munich | 36 | 25-7-4 | 2.28 | 2.33 | 2.35 |
| Borussia Dortmund | 36 | 22-5-9 | 1.97 | 1.81 | 1.94 |
| Juventus | 36 | 21-9-6 | 2.00 | 1.92 | 2.08 |
| Inter | 36 | 22-4-10 | 1.94 | 1.92 | 2.10 |
| AC Milan | 36 | 15-9-12 | 1.50 | 1.54 | 1.89 |
| Napoli | 36 | 25-5-6 | 2.22 | 1.85 | 2.02 |
| PSG | 36 | 29-3-4 | 2.50 | 2.38 | 2.30 |
Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are the reassuring constants: 2.28 and 2.19 points per game, almost identical to their other league form. For those two, the break simply does not show up in the results.
Section CAston Villa, Brest and Marseille beat the odds after the break
Aston Villa top this chart by a distance. They took 2.12 points per game in 25 first matches back, going 16-5-4, against 1.42 expected, a gap of +0.70 per game, while their record in other matches sits barely above the market. Brest, at 1.60 against 1.21 expected, and Marseille, at 2.14 against 1.75 across 37 games, follow at +0.39 and +0.38.
Real Sociedad are an interesting case too: clearly positive after breaks, slightly negative in every other round. That contrast is what I would want explained by squad news before trusting it.
Minimum 25 first matches back; most clubs have 36.

The big caveat applies most here. Most clubs have only around 36 first matches back in ten seasons, and a gap of ±0.30 points per game can appear by pure chance, so only Villa sit comfortably beyond that noise. I also cannot tell from this data who actually travelled, which is exactly the gap I try to fill by hand each break.
Section DHellas Verona, Genoa and Southampton fall short after breaks
At the other end, Hellas Verona took 0.79 points per game in 28 first matches back, going 5-7-16, against 1.15 expected, which is −0.37 per game. Genoa sit close behind at 0.82 against 1.15, with a striking 16 draws in their 4-16-14 record.
Southampton's −0.32 needs context, because they underperform the market in other matches too, so the break only deepens an existing problem. Alavés and Osasuna are cleaner signals: both fall well below their prices after breaks yet sit slightly above the market the rest of the time.

These are smaller clubs with thinner squads, and that is the plausible thread. When one or two returning internationals are carrying knocks, there is less cover behind them, and the odds include the absences already known, not the tired legs.
Club verdict
What this file means before you bet.
- Trust the overall price. Across the top five leagues, the first match back produced 1.37 points per game against 1.38 expected. A blanket post-break angle has no edge; any edge sits with specific clubs and specific team news.
- Respect Villa, check Napoli. Aston Villa's +0.70 per game is the one gap clearly beyond chance, and Napoli's 2.22 against 1.85 expected deserves a second look on the coupon. Club samples are small, so treat these as reasons to look closer, not standing bets.
- Dig deeper on strugglers. Hellas Verona, Genoa and Alavés have all fallen well below their prices after breaks. When they are favoured, confirm who returned fit from international duty before backing them.
